Atom bomb designer dies

Hans Bethe, one of the giants of 20th century physics, has died. He was awarded the 1967 Nobel prize in physics for his theory on the nuclear reactions that take place inside stars and was one of the key figures in the Manhattan atomic bomb project during the Second World War. After the war he spoke out in favour of arms control and nuclear disarmament. Bethe was born in 1906 in Strasbourg, now in France but then part of Germany.
