Science selects "Water on Mars" as breakthrough of the year The discovery that Mars once contained water has been chosen as the breakthrough of the year by Science magazine. Breakthroughs in low-temperature physics and the discovery of double pulsars also feature in the magazine's top ten highlights of 2004 (Science 306 2010). Mars was explored like never before in 2004. NASA landed two rovers -- Opportunity and Spirit -- on the red planet, while the European Space Agency placed Mars Express in orbit around our near neighbour.
