Ferromagnets and superconductors make negative-index materials Physicists in Europe and the US have discovered a new type of negative-refractive-index material that is made from layers of superconducting and ferromagnetic thin films. Until now, negative refraction had only been achieved in metamaterials and photonic crystals. The team has also shown that the index of refraction can be switched between positive and negative values using an external magnetic field (Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 247009).
