"End states" come into view

Physicists in the US have observed "end states" on chains of atoms for the first time. The discovery could improve our understanding of the properties of electrons in one-dimensional structures and could have applications in nanoelectronics (J N Crain and D T Pierce 2005 Science 307 703). Just as the surface of a material has very different properties from the bulk, the atoms at the end of a one-dimensional structure should behave differently to the other atoms in the structure.
