Can proteins perform logic? Theoretical physicists in the UK have shown that it should be possible to use clusters of proteins to perform complex logic operations. The work could also improve our understanding of protein "switches" (Phys. Biol. 2 159). The main role of many proteins is to transmit and process information in living cells. These processes involve other molecules called regulatory ligands that bind to specific sites on the surface of the protein.
