Looking inside glass Physicists in the UK and France have observed previously unseen long-range ordering in glass. Philip Salmon of Bath University and colleagues at Bristol University and the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble have seen the ordering in two very different glassy materials, which suggests that it could be a common feature of all glasses (Nature 435 75). Understanding the nature of the glassy state remains one of the outstanding challenges in condensed-matter physics.
