Gadget recharging goes wireless You could soon charge your mobile phone by simply leaving it on a desk or tabletop, thanks to physicists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who have come up with a new way to power electronic gadgets without an electrical cable. Marin Soljacic and colleagues have devised a wireless technique that uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy from a power source to a device several metres away (arXiv.org/physics/ 0611063).
